People wore three ornaments on the neck—a choker, one necklace descending down to the collar bone and the third one covering the breasts. All these ornaments were made of strips of metals and beads.
Most of the necklaces recovered from the Indus Valley are made of beads. From Harappa, a necklace with thirteen pendants composed of several beads strung together on a copper wire, four long-faceted beads of gold, two cylindrical gold beads and discs of gold were retrieved. Apart from this, a necklace of two hundred and forty round gold beads was also found; an astonishingly large number and variety of beads—made of gold, silver and copper—have been dug up during excavations at Harappa.

A number of pendants were also found in Harappa; a beautiful heart shaped bead made of gold, a crescent shaped agate pendant, and a lotus shaped pendant which has eight petals, inlaid with lapis lazuli and red stones alternatively. The lapis lazuli inlay is..marvellously still intact.
In Mohenjodaro beads made of jade, jasper, agate. carnelian, chalcedony and gold have been found. Unlike Harappa, where a copper wire was used to string the beads, here a thick gold one was used.
