For Centuries, the Hindu jati or caste systems and their occupations have been integrally interconnected. Even the Vedic Social classification ased on the hierarchically organised four varnas (classes), i.e. Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra, placed th Brahmin, the ritual technocrat, at the top of the social ladder while the craftspersons, including the goldsmiths, were included under the bottom category of Shudras. Generally a person practiced the hereditary occupation of his caste and sub-caste, i.e. a person born in a particular sub-caste of carpenter became a carpenter, and that of a potter a potter, by the virtue of his birth as well as that of his profession. Though the caste of a person, determined by his birth, could hardly be changed, there was some degree of flexibility in the matter of changing one’s occupation withing
the broader social strata. Today, though hereditary caste and occupation structures and loosening on account of democratic ideals, modern education and the enhanced mobility of professional groups, leading to the precedence of acquired professional skill over the inherited social strata continue to prevail. Innumerable castes of goldsmiths, spread all over India are entangled in the maze of these highly convoluted social structure.

Hi Shalini, The jewelry you have showcased is amazing. For more you could refer my website (http://www.bodyjewelry.com/). I truly agree that India has a history of such body piercings and adorn beautiful jewelry. But now its not just limited to India. The world over is going crazy for such jewelry. Till much time parents considered it a taboo but lately with such intricate and elegant designs, they have given up. People used to think only rockers or bikers wore such jewelry. Diamond is any day beautiful but youths prefer something that is pocket friendly and could be changed everyday.
wow what a collection, really very impressive.
